I am having trouble getting all of the pins out. I bought a nice set of pin punches and have used lots of penetrating oil. So far I have gotten two of the pins out on the left caster. The ones on the right won't budge.
As far as the arm pin on the base. I smashed the pin, to the point where the pin actually split and then smooshed into the hole. I have no idea how to get it out now. I have been trying to drill it out with no success. I am even considering drilling an access hole through the other side of the base to try to punch it back the other way.
The problem I guess is that these pins haven't moved in 55 years and they are rusted. I found changing the bearings much easier than removing these pins. I don't get why they would use these pins. why not just a set screw or some other easily removable device
I am stuck. especially with the base arm pin. I am gonna go whack at the casters some more
I would consider drilling out the hole in the base a couple sizes so that you can see better what the pin has actually done. If it has rolled in on itself, I think it can still be driven out.
Many continuous light taps are better here than a large hammer and a mighty swing. Tat, tap, tap and not wham.

Driving the pin from the other side is a longer reach and it will be difficult to keep the pin punch properly aligned with the roll pin so as to not bend it while trying to drive it.

I am just curious and not challenging your decision to do so but why do you find it necessary to disassemble the caster units?

So far I have three of the caster pins out. Furthermore, you can paint it and put it back in service without getting the pin out. Don't let this get you down. I know this is easier for me to say than for for you to live with but this is not your last challenge.

This is not end end of sawdust, russsaw. There are solutions to be had even if the pin never comes out.

@ dusty - I am wanting to take the casters apart so I can put them in the electrolysis bucket and get all the rust off. The springs are completely rusted.
& JPG - I could buy those, but it's just more money invested and the aren't green
