I posted the other day about having two complete shops. The first shop set up came from my Grandfather. He had a mark V 510 with most of the STPs I needed to start my own shop. He passed away 2 Aprils ago and had a local honor guard funeral.
My Grandmother had his flag in a dresser drawer with some memorabilia for over a year and wanted me to build him a flag case with my inherited SS. Unfortunately for the first year after his death, I could only plan the case in my head and on paper as I was in an apartment.
Last April, we bought our first home and I made sure it had a workshop. I got the SS in September and was able to finally build the flag case this month after getting the shop in order.
I am proud of this case and I wanted to share with a few of the other woodworkers on this site. Here are some of the details:
>> Size Overall height 17", length 26", Depth 10" This thing is huge.
>>Full walnut construction. Even used a walnut ply on the back which was later turned around to show the walnut after the pictures were taken.
>>15 bullet casing incorporated into the case from his funeral.
>>Memorabilia drawer underneath.
>>Neodymium magnets to hold the drawer in place.
>>Real glass cut in place for the top and viewing drawer, no plexi here.
>>Stainless steel screws to add support in strategic locations.
>>General finishes oil/urethane coat for the natural finish.
Please feel free to steal the design if you have a Veteran who needs honored in your family. I researched flag cases online for months trying to find a design I liked and couldn't so I made my own. Now you can use the design if you like as well.
Since giving the case to my Grandmother, her favorite thing is not the flag display on top but actually the drawer. She finds something to add to it all the time and loves she has a place to store his things.
