My Shopsmith was squeaking and grinding; I took the cover off, and this is what I found.
What are these things called, and is it something I should be able to fix?

Was a PIC supposed to be attached?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

That would be the outer bearing race from the main shaft bearing. Looks like the bearing is toast. Pretty easy fix if you have the right tools to remove it and remove the bearings from the shaft.

The ring is the shield, and the inner mangled parts that pushed the shield out is the ball spacer ring.wingshadow wrote:Yes it was.
