I tried out my Belt sander last night. Love it. Like the aux spindle as well.
Went to try the vertical position and I am wondering if mine has been altered. I have a simple nut bolt combination to loosen and then it all should slide vertical, but it didn't slide easy and the slide surfaces have a bunch of waxy stuff on them? It looks like the other trunion lock is not meant to be adjusted? I found the manual and the hardback guide both with no good pictures or explanations.
Can anyone provide me a pic of yours? I was wondering if I have the original nut bolt set up. How would I remove that trunion lock to clean the slide assembley?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

To lock the belt sander in either vertical or horizontal, I use a 2nd bolt and nut. The single locking point was never adequate for me feel comfortable. I find that I keep the belt sander in the vertical position a great majority of the time.
If that Sawdust Session does not answer you questions, let me know and I'll give it a go (with a couple pictures).
There should be go goop to contend with. I recommend cleaning it up real good, applying a thin coat of wax and buffing it out.
I find that going from vertical to horizontal or back is a two handed operation.

I think at one time Shopsmith put some substance like a beeswax or such on the trunnion. I clean this stuff off and wax the area. Shopsmith ships the sander with a second bolt. If I remember correctly it is a 5/16" hex bolt with nut and washers. I replace the hex nut with a wing nut. As Dusty suggests, the second bolt tends to tighten up the set up.
