Nova G3

Post by algale »

If you haven't seen the email, Shopsmith has a special on a Nova G3 lathe chuck, with Shopsmith adapter and both the regular jaws and the pin jaws. I don't recall seeing a Nova G3 offered by Shopsmith before (as opposed to the Oneway chucks).

I've been looking for a chuck, and was thinking about the Oneway Talon or the SuperNova2, so if anybody has experience with the G3 and cares to comment, I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Al

Thanks for the plug on the G3. Have you owned other chucks?

I am also thinking of getting the G3. Can it be used for both round and square stock?

Yes, they'll handle both round and square stock within the limits of the jaw set. The capacities should be listed on the Shopsmith site or another that sells the chuck. The Nova G3 is a "scroll" chuck," meaning that all four jaws move in unison to grip the stock.

I also have a Talon chuck. Both have served me well.

Do you prefer one over the other? If so, why?

I'm waiting for BPR's answer as well. I am about to order the G3 (birthday gift) for myself).:)

It states in the ad that this chuck is especially designed to clamp wood without damaging the wood fibers. Should I also be reading that to say that it should not be used to grip metal stock that I might want to turn?

I really don't have a preference for either one. I think anyone who would purchase the G3 would not be disaappointed. They both operate the same. I picked up the Talon chuck when Shopsmith had their "garage sale" a couple of years ago.
