Intro, Speed Control Creep

I am new to the forum, and new to the SS. I have a Greenie and a 510.

I have been doing some routing on the 510. At high speeds, the speed setting is not stable. It creeps up, faster and faster. I have searched this forum for suggestions, but can't find anything. Maybe I am searching using the wrong keywords...

Has anyone experienced this before? Suggestions to remedy the problem?

Welcome, Onetrack. I, too, have a Greenie and a 510. I think it makes for a great combination and often use both on a given project. While I don't have an answer, I'm sure that many others will. This is THE place to keep your machines up and running to perfection. Glad you found us!

Yep! I have had the same problem (as seen in the thread pennview showed us). Shopsmith customer service diagnosed a worn pork chop. They were right-on. At the same time I found the control sheave shaft was worn along with the "short key" that guides the shaft. Replacement of those two parts ended the problem.

The cause? ---- in adequate lubrication. As a newbie, I was dropping two drops into the hole on the control sheave shaft without first running the machine up to full speed. There's no way oil could get in along the shaft and key. Had to learn the hard way!:( Also I will mention that 6,7, or 10 drops of oil will really be appreciated by the little bearing at the end of the shaft. (every 10 fours of operation!!!)

I had that problem. Control sheave keyway badly worn. I assume it was wobbling and that pushed the porkchop causing increasing speed. I put up with it until it wore so bad that the sheave jumped a 'slot' and jammed. New control sheave and key eliminated the problem. Some oil didn't hurt either!!!
