How to clean carborundum stones?

Post by wgander »

The instruction sheet in the box says to wash them with kerosene. I don't have kerosene and no other use for it: will anything else do as well?
(I tried using stones that look flat but they're smooth: probably never been cleaned. They belonged to my father and father-in-law, probably 50-60 years old and not used for 20 years; I enjoy cleaning up and using their old tools.)

WD-40 will work - but kerosene is better. After cleaning, I use light turbine oil to float the metal away until the next cleaning.

Diesel fuel might work as a stone cleaner.

Kerosene is basically the same as No 1 diesel fuel. No 1 is lighter than the more common No 2. I would think you could use regular Mineral Spirits too.

If you have some paint thinner, give that a try. Soak it for a while, then let it air dry outside to avoid the fumes. You also could scrub it with an old tooth brush.

...lost a week due to knee replacement; hope to be back in the shop in a couple of days.
No kerosene/diesel, and no other use for them, so I don't think I'll be buying a container to bring either one to the shop.

You might give denatured alcohol a try. A combination of denatured alcohol mixed half/half with acetone is often referred to as a universal solvent for cleaning.
As for the knee: Keep it moving. I had mine done 3 years in November. Find a good physical therapist or personal trainer to keep you moving and stretching. It still gets stiff, and kneeling down is a chore, but no pain, and I get to enjoy the grandkids.
Best to you

Good luck with the rehab.

Dave

If you do not want to obtain denatured alcohol for only this single use, try the 'natured' kind aka grain alcohol or 151 proof rum.:D I am sure most of us could find another use for it!;)
