Mini Chicken Coop Project

Just recently completed this mini chicken coop for 6 new members of the household. Grandkids wanted some baby chicks around Easter and could not have them at their house, so being the nice Grandpa that I am, I had the room and have been wanting some fresh eggs anyways, so I took on this project. Now only need to wait for a few more months for the eggs. All the wood used for this project was cull lumber from Home Depot, about $20.00, so the expense was very minimal. Also the paint was cull and only cost $5.00. Used the SS table saw, band saw and Kreg Jig for the pocket holes.

City Dweller asking a Farmer question.

1) Do ya gotta have a rooster to get eggs from the hens.

2) If a rooster does fertilize them are they fit to eat.

Think I know the answers, but do want them verified.

I assume the only reason for a rooster is if you want to hatch chicks.

Raising hens comes later.

Then eggs.

Answer to you Dave -

Not really a farmer but my grand parents were and I grew up in the country and was in the F.F.A. when I was in high school, so know a little about farming.

Both breeds of these chickens lay brown eggs and you only need a rooster if you want fertile eggs for future chicks, which I did not want and also didn't really need a rooster crowing and bothering neighbors. I used to buy farm fresh eggs from a lady that had a rooster as well and some of the eggs had blood spots which I would separate from the rest of egg and never got ill from eating the rest of egg.

Chickens not particularly enlightened, I'm thinking it was probably the rooster.
