Aluminum Stanley tote.

Ran across this little gem today doing some rust hunting after the Shopsmith demo at Lowe's

It is a Aluminum Stanley tote. A little research shows it was sold as an accessory for schools. Guess the kids in 40's were a bunch of knuckle heads busting the wooden totes

Anyone know some history or if the tote was painted when new?

I've seen these totes show up on eBay (alone, or installed on planes). I think they were always 'natural' aluminum. I wonder how it felt to use one. A wood handle has some comfortable resilience, and a whole wooden plane has some more.

It might not be much fun in a cold shop. While a wood handle on about anything would be cold too an aluminum one would pretty much suck the heat out of your hand.
