Here we have the footboard of the bed from hell. I am now certifiable crazy. I talked the client into all those through mortises. I've learned more chisel sharpening methods than I dreamed ever existed! I used poplar for the larger parts, and 100 year old barn oak for all the pins. The carvings are over 100 years old. As I posted months ago, the carved larger panel was in 50 some odd pieces! It has taken months just to get that repaired and painted. The color is kinda wierd right now, it's only the first coat of stain. Custom shading will be done at the end. Learned how to burn up, then actually set up a mortising machine,too! Will post the completed bed when it's done. Still have to assemble the headboard, and build/finish the side rails. Took me 5 weeks to get the lumber yard to get the dimensions correct!!! jimsjinx

Jim, that is one fine and beautiful piece of furniture. Can hardly wait to see the remainder of it. Anything that looks that good takes patience, patience, patience and some work. Great job.

Jim, you are incredible. That is one nice piece of furniture. I didn't pick up if the gold appearing insert is metal or carved wood? Again, that is totally beautiful.

Thanks alot you all! The carvings are made of Sitka Spruce. Originally, the carvings were real gold leaf, and in Japan. Over thier life, someone had bought them(4 of em), and used them in a high end resturaunt in New York. When that closed, a lady bought them that is a dealer in Florida, and she sold the worst one to my client. Someone painted over the24K gold leaf!!! I tried and tried to convince the owner to do it back in gold leaf, even if I guilded it in fake gold, it would have been stunning. But alas, he wanted paint. I opted for an epoxy paint. The most interesting thing, was the wonderful smell of that wood when you sanded or otherwise disturbed that wood! It filled the shop with a sweet and potent pine smell I have never smelled before. Several pieces were missing, so I had to do a little carving to repair it. A fun project, and a very nice client. I lucked out on this one! And Oh yeah, did ya see my work triangle? It's right in the middle of the "Hexagon of Hell", as my wife calls it!!! jimsjinx

I finally put the last coats of catilyzed satin lacquer on the bed early this morning. Now I can't find the client! jimsjinx
