Should I sell my Table Saw?

Post by notlem »

Since I bought my Shopsmith earlier this year, I haven't used my standalone table saw. Of course I haven't braved much time in the garage due to the inferno of Phoenix in summer, so I don't have a feel for full, start-to-finish, large scale projects with only the Shopsmith tablesaw.

I have a nice mid-range Delta saw with the cast iron top. It's a decent saw, just mind-numbingly loud compared to the Shopsmith:) . I thought of setting it up as a dedicated dado machine, but it seems like a good chunk of value just to sit most of the time when I don't have a full range of shop tools.

I don't have a lot of extra cash right now to fill out the rest of my tools. I thought if I could CL it and pick up a few bucks, I could buy some other items.

Would it be silly to get rid of my saw, probably loosing a good chunk of it's value in the transaction? Will I really miss having access to a tilt arbor around my shop?

If I had room for a good, reliable table saw, I would not part with it just because I had a Shopsmith. A table saw has some virtues never to be had by a Mark V.

I would have a Unisaw keeping my two Mark Vs company if I had the space.

Me too Dusty.
I wouldn't get rid of it either. Be real handy to have a tilt arbor saw.

I got rid of my Craftsman table saw because I did not of room for it.There have been a lot of times I wish I had it back. I would not have gotten rid of it if I had room for it.

Sell your table saw and get a Eurekazone EZ-One or tracksaw setup... I know SDSSmith and I both have, as well as a few other shopsmithers :)

That's a slick set-up alright. Down the road perhaps. I need too many other tools first.

I'm on the hunt for a PC Dovetail machine next.

I think I would find out why your Delta saw is mind numbingly loud. A mid range Delta saw should be at the same noise level as a Shopsmith or slightly quieter in my opinion and experience.

The same process is occuring in both. A motor is turning basically no noise there, the motor is turning a pulley and belt setup, again no real noise there.
which are turning an arbor and a blade. No noise in from the arbor but the blades tend to sing. Some blades are louder than others.

I would disconnect the belt from the motor and run the motor if there is mind numbing sound from it I would find out what is going on. Most likely cause of a noisey motor bad bearings. Then I would remove the blade from the saw reconnect the belt to motor and run the saw. If I then heard a mind numbing noise I would find where it was coming from and fix that problem. Two likely places the belt is rubbing on something or the arbor bearing is going bad. Lastly I would mount the blade and if that was where the noise was coming from I would try another blade.

A properly running table saw hardly makes any noise at all.
