Cincinnati, the second post revealed caskets that I saw in East Tennessee up until about the mid-1960's. If you wanted it to be a little fancy, you went to the fabric store for material to cover the wood.
Someone mentioned early on, not to spend the money on the wooden ones. When my wife and I went through to arrange for our pre-needs, the cherry and oak caskets were in the neighborhood of $40K - $50K, depending on the decorations. Then a vault could be from $500 to $6000 with your initials in gold on the lid. Talk about a racket.
Good thread and thoughts.

I just love it when she says I can go make sawdust.

Urn
Here is an Urn I made on a request from a family member. Hope it doesn't get used for a long time, but it's here when she needs it.

Very fine piece of woodworking, Dan!:D Your excellent craftsmanship is apparent throughout and subtlety hidden in the beautiful carved figures!

Cremations are much more common in the UK. Some believe that the coffins don't get burned but sold again and again. (No idea if that is true or not but I do hear it mentioned.) Maybe I should start a rental business?
Strange how some react to the idea of mortality. I came to terms with it decades ago but now that it's odds on I'm into my last decade, every time I try to raise the subject with my sprogs they freeze up and force me to change the subject.
One perverse thought was to prepay for my funeral using a credit card. Time it right and most of the debt dies with me lol.

'Over here' a common practice is to pre pay by way of a paid up life insurance policy payable to the 'undertaker'. Since both the policy and funeral rates will likely increase it may compensate for 'inflation'. Any excess death payment above the funeral costs can be refunded to the estate. The actual 'arrangements' can also be defined pre 'need'.
