help with using router in drill press mode

I got hold of some small mesquite slabs, (thanks Jerry) and my sister wanted a hall pass for school so I cut and shaped it and magic markered it with her name and such, but alas I wasn't happen with the funky magic marker.

so I thought I would put the SS in drill press mode and attach my router bit holder and groove out the name and add some red inlace I have to jazz up the hall pass.

never done this before.
would I.

get the pre determained depth all ready set up
hold the wood with my hands
get the wife (this will be a trip) to bring down the quill
while I cut a shallow cut out?
