Sawsmith belt

Post by dougham »

I have a 10" Magna Sawsmith that I bought in about 1976. The drive belt finally died of old age and needs to be replaced. So far I have been unsuccessful in finding one. If anybody knows where a replacement belt can be purchased, I would be greatful. thanks....

The belt is a 3L140 and is available from a number of sources, Google it. You can find support from fellow users here.

Thanks, Rob. The description of belt#3L140 does not seem to fit the belt I have. Mine is +- 11/16 w X +- 4 5/8 dia. (when held round) X +- 7/16oa. thick. Gates describes #3L140 as 3/8 X 14", just don't think that'll work. I've had no luck cross ref. the # MAGNA 503 257. Thanks too for the link to that other sight, while looking at some posts on there, the only real sugestion I saw was "Link-Belt". Never used one, maybe only option? Hope not,the way the saw is built I don't think there is ANY room for slop in the fit of the belt. Plus, I would like to keep this saw as orig. as possible. Any other thoughts?

Go to the Sawsmith site linked in my earlier post and check the database, they offer a number of options for the belt. Good luck with it.

You are right on the cross sectional dimensions, I just pulled my belt cover to get a better look. I suspect that the equivalent was based on the closest fit available off the shelf. When you start looking for belts that short, 3L seems to be the widest available off the shelf. The power twist link belt sounds like an option, it used to be available in a 5/8" width. You could also call Shopsmith to see if they still might have the belt in stock (though it does not show up on the website).
