As others have suggested, I coated the rods with Penetrol. My first experiment with the product.

-To condition fiberglass: use on fiberglass surfaces and boats

I don't think the oil based paint instruction is applicable to our particular discussion Pennview. Just use it for the bare metal usage guidelines and enjoy the benefits. I am going to get me some of this stuff for sure.

Yes, I understand that the discussion has been about applying this stuff to bare metal as a protective coating. I'm simply curious why a product would exclude indoor use, although the descriptive sheet Ed provided allows for indoor use. I guess if I want to figure this out, I'll have to call the folks that make it.

I have used it on my exterior undulated sheet of metal that cover my garage, it was rusted, I just brush to remove the loose rust and to clean the surface and then I spayed it with an agricultural sprayer on to the surface, straight no paint. An it still looking good 7 years later. It is as if I would have use varnish on my walls. And with the colour of the rust, it is not to bad looking.
I painted the wood post of my front porch and use some penetrol in my paint, it made the paint penetrating in the wood, several coats and it is holding very well. Sadly the product is not UV resistant and it is not easy to find stores carrying it. I have to order it.
I guess, the interior usage require to be in a well ventilated area during the curing of it anyway.
There you have my experience on this product. Hope it is useful.
