From post 25 this thread.

The result of using shopsmith hardware and template.

"I did notice however that the template they provided doesn't quite get it off the ground on the first stop and it is only about a quoarter inch of the ground in the next position."

Hence some 'discussion'!;)

I would have thought they got it right also!

Yeah, we shall see.

Note that there is no tax on a shopsmith order, whereas where I am at there is 9.5%. Granted, since you are in Oregon there is no sales tax.

When I checked just now, shipping was $8.50 for me on $36 casters.

So total shipped with template (which should be correct, we shall see) is $44.50, whereas my local place is $33 with no template. If you are ordering other stuff I would call it a wash.

Note that the casters I got are, I believe, identical to the SS ones. If you are willing to go with cheaper quality (ie: no ball bearings) then you can probably save some cash and cut the cost in half. There are two main things that you get with the nicer casters - easier to move due to reduced friction, and easier to go over uneven floor. Lower quality casters would only address the second.

The casters that you purchased locally, are they the SC part number
21PP30GI4469YY (# with bearings).

I think the above change is needed.

http://www.durablecasters.com/pdf/series-21.pdf, plus http://www.durablecasters.com/pdf/part- ... -guide.pdf

21 - Series
PP - Poly-Pro Wheel
30 - 3.0" diameter
G - 1 1/4" width
I - Gray/Gray wheel color
44 - Single precision ball bearing, 3/8 w/Full T
91 - Grip Ring 7/16 x 1-3/8
YY - Generic placeholder for options.

Note that they had to assemble these for me. Baiscally, you pick your wheel and your caster holder, then they put them together. This also means that the same overall part number with the 30 replaced with 40 or 50 respectively should get you 4" or 5" wheels.

Thank you for the corrections and clarification of the part number.

For me it was a different discussion, Shopsmith's solution seems not work as provided, eBay solution costs less and may or may not work depending on my math. I am happy to buy stuff from Shopsmith when they have it and it works.

Does anyone have the Shopsmith casters installed and working correctly? I need to be able to run over cards and bumps.

Is 97 a better fit since the Shopsmith part is 7/16 x 1-15/16?

Mine measure 1 5/8.

The 97 option is not offered in the 21 series. With a swivel bearing I think you would want the bottom of the mounting tube to contact the top of the upper raceway cap for better support.

I thought the same thing and came to the same conclusion. I looked around for the 1 5/8 ones and didn't find any. the 1 15/16 certainly could be an option in theory. But, as I noted - I believe the part number I posted is as close to SS's one as possible (except for the color).
