I was there today. They had external and internal C-clips, but no E-clips as Ed received from Shopsmith.

Those were what I was thinking of when he mentioned 'wound'. Could not picture using that type on the bandsaw.

I think terminology is the victim of trade marking. What to me more resembles a "C" clip is a 'circline'(?) retainer. As I recall the "E" clips were c clips(another trade name). What I have also seen described as "c" clips are to me retaining rings with internal 'eyes' as opposed to those with outward facing 'eyes'.

Common terminology seems to have evolved, so I have 'made up' some!;)

These parts are from Truarc, they call them E shaft rings. Once upon a time when I did mechanical design work I used Truarc parts because they proved so much nice design information. In those days it was a paper reference catalog which they freely provided. I bet if I were to dig around in the attic I might even find a copy.... probably dated from the early 70's.

Pictured are various retaining rings. Interestingly, Shopsmith has no less than 7 retaining rings in the headstock diagram that I have for my 1982. All are simply called "ring-retaining" and are different sizes and functions.

Shown in the photo is the "wound-ring" I took from my 1982 bandsaw upper wheel shaft and replaced with an E-clip like Ed ordered and pictured.

I guess this is a case of Harbor Freight being/having different merchandise depending on which store you go to. I've nopticed they just don't seem to be very consistent. I know the one HF store that I visit does have an assortment pack of those E-clips because I purchased a pack. But, I guess not all store locations carry them.

I've also seen them other places as well (auto parts stores & Tractor Supply). Those clips are used for a lot of different applications. Not just unique to Shopsmith.

While greasing the upper wheel bearing I damaged my "wound" ring. I'd like to replace it with an e-clip or snap ring. Does anyone know what size is needed? I couldn't find my caliper before I left for work.

The shaft is 1/2".

Realize the clip needs to grip the od of the slightly smaller groove.

From something I read on a machinist forum, the size of the e-clip is based on the shaft size, and assumes a smaller groove. However, I'll probably buy a 1/2" as well as a 7/16", just in case.
