Retaining ring for bandsaw wheel?

The upper wheel shaft retaining ring or spring (old-style) that holds the upper wheel in place....it seems very fragile. Is it OK to replace it with a garden variety "snap ring"? I thought I'd pick up an assortment at Harbor freight or Northern tool if it will work OK. I see that Shopsmith refers to it as a "snap ring" in newer literature, so I'm assuming that it's the style with 2 small holes that come in internal and external styles and you use a tool to remove and install.

I wasn't referring to a "c-clip", but to the old style "wound" ring. I had read where folks had destroyed them during removal.

Now my wife thinks that she is fragile......hmmmm.

Thanks for the photos,Ed. So it's an "e" clip, not a "c" clip. Gosh, the semantics involved in parts identification!

Wish I needed something else from SS so I could include these. But it seems like a very small purchase by itself with shipping and all. Guess I'll head to the borg today.

Guess I need to learn what a 'wound' ring is.

To me what is now sometimes referred to as an 'e' clip has always before been a 'c' clip.

I ran into a 'wound ring' on something within the last several months.....can't remember on what, but it was a real PITA.
It's like a piece of a Slinky....a thin flat wound spring that snaps into the groove on the shaft. Course I always have problems with c/e clips pinging across the way when trying to work with them too.....

Harbor Freight also has an assortment set of those E-Clips/C-Clips things.

There are two 'wound rings' in the Mark V headstock, one on each side of the drive sleeve.
