Looks like a flower to me.

Thanks for giving us a report! I still haven't gotten to even cut me some wood in the back yard. But I want to, and I also want to watch the video again, maybe several times. He sells the whole video which I'm guess gives you more hints and tricks but it is in PAL format and I'm not sure he takes orders from the US.

His tool is unlike anything I own so I will have to think about how to deal with that. I have the basic tools that came with the shopsmith and the bowl set from shopsmith and one 1" skew that I have modified with an arc.

As for watching the video, I ran up and down the stairs 3 times, i.e. I'd try something and it wouldn't work so I run back upstairs and watch the video again. To me, the angle used to shoot the video was a little deceiving or maybe I just saw what I expected at first.

Now to the skew. I used the heel of a 1" sorby oval skew. It has a much shallower cutting angle than my SS skew. I've also curved mine, but only at the long point end so that wasn't an issue using the heel. I'm not sure how the curve would impact the cut. All I can say is try it and let us know.

In any case, the handle of the skew has to be way to the left to get the cutting edge parrallel to the axis as the video shows. This was really strange to me. A skew that wasn't skewed would be better.

I'm not that thrilled with the flowers, but I really enjoy learning new techiques.

turned flowers

Post by ralphtaff »

I just seen the video on turning flowers it is cool real cool. on down mention was made about the lathe that was used. I had one a few years ago made out of an old treadle sewing machine hooked up to an electric motor. I noticed a treadle or foot mechanism on the video. I am sorry i got rid of the old thing now. it would be fun to try it out on that old machine and then hook it up to the foot power. merry cristmas and a happy new year. ps iseen the ss logo in other blogs and forums keep up the good work.

Post by ralphtaff »

Well i got excited so much i did not finish reading all the posts. and the i remembered i did the flower thing by accident one time is jr high school shop. i remember the shop teacher yelling at me because i did not hold the tool right, or did not follow thru with the cut. it upset me so bad i almost forgot it until it was mentioned about holding the tool different. to me back the i was holding the tool the best way it felt good in my hands. i had to learn a different way to hold the tools in school.

Hi,

I haven't gotten to far on this project yet but I did manage to find the right sized piece of redtwig dogwood to harvest. It's in the garage waiting to be sized for length and then for me to see how badly I can mess it up, or not.

I'm thinking later this week might be a good time to give it a try as we are having a small warm up outside and the garage temperature is going up towards working levels.

If I get anything to turn out I'll post a picture.
