But is not easily movable to the rear position.

My problem is money. And the $60 plus seems to be an awful price to pay to replace the spring missing in mine. Mine always works well and is pretty safe I think. With everything you have to be careful. And I think the original guard does a good job. If I can fix it that is.

By the way, has anybody checked to see if the spring for the new guard is the same as the old guard? Or will it fit the old guard?

I am looking at a manual for Jointer I got last month. It also has a broken spring. The part number for the spring is 514196, same as the part in the manual at the web site. My manual has PL-5036 Rev. 9/87 on the back cover as its identifier. Now I need to decide between upgrade that is about what I have in the jointer and a $7.19 spring (+ S & H ).

Well, I made an attempt to fabricate the missing parts to my jointer guard. I made the washer/bearing/drive plate with the 6-sided hole to receive the bottom end of the spring ok. But the spring was the problem. I bought the closest type of spring from the local hardware store and tried with much difficulty to cut and bend the ends to shape. And then I put it together along with a flat washer on the bottom to hold the plate and spring in, holding it with a little epoxy. But in operation it didn't work smoothly and then the bottom end of the spring popped out of the hole in the drive plate on the bottom. So, I think I will just shelve the idea and run without it like I have been doing. Now I see why the retainer/washer on the bottom has that rounded space bulging out of the bottom. It covers the end of the original loop in the spring that protrudes through the drive plate. Not easy to fabricate that either.
