Jointer guard repair

I have a ShopSmith jointer (Grey) and the swinging spring loaded guard that keeps your fingers out of the cutterhead is missing some parts and doesn't work. I have the cast aluminum guard piece and the special bolt that goes though it with the octagonal end on it that fits into the hole in the top surface of the jointer, but am missing the spring and washer and some sort of clip I imagine that held the spring in there. What parts fit in there and are they something I can buy somewhere or make to fit it? I see that Shopsmith sells a "new, improved" model but its cost is kind of prohibitive. But I think for safety I would like to have a functional one as I have been working without it.

I have been looking at that picture, which doesn't show much detail, but its of the newer type of guard. And I am not sure if I order the spring for this one that it will fit mine. I borrowed one from a friend to look at and his appears to have a flat washer punched into a circular space in the bottom to hold the spring in, plus it looks like there is an octagonal washer above that that engages the octagonal shaft and must engage the bottom of the spring somehow, as there is a slot in the top casting that must engage the top of the spring. So, will the spring for the newer guard fit the older guard and I would have to make the octagonal holed washer and flat washer to retain the spring at the bottom?

I'm in the same position. I'm missing the spring and possibly more to make the guard work. I called customer service and their solution was the new improved jointer guard. They said they don't stock replacement parts for the old guard.

And yes, when I look at the cost compared to what I paid for the jointer, I find it cost prohibitive to pay for the upgrade.

So, how can we figure out if the new guard spring will fit the old guard? I think I could hand make the washer and the octagonal drive piece that fits inside of the guard bottom. But it would be a lot of hand work and I am not sure what it looks like to receive the bottom of the spring. In my guard there is a small slot in the guard casting under the screw on knob that obviously received a vertical tale end of the spring bent to the top. But what did the bottom of the spring look like and did it fit in a matching hole in a washer with an octagonal hole to drive the shaft?

Thanks very much for the picture. Now I see what is going on here. Although I can't see the exact shape of the spring. There are only the 6 parts to the guard that I expected to see. Starting at the top: 2952 the knob, 2926 the guard itself, 2948 the spring I am looking for, 2946 the 6-sided shaft with threads on the top for the knob to screw onto, 2949 the six sided hole washer that rotates with the shaft and must receive the bottom of the spring in a drilled hole since the top of the spring fits into the guard hole, and 2792 the flat washer or retaining plate that holds the spring and 6 sided washer in place. I have now constructed the 6-sided hole washer (part 2949) from a flat 1/2" washer, and now I need to go see if I can buy a spring that I can cut and bend vertical tips on to fit in the guard hole at the top and the 6 sided drive washer at the bottom. So, maybe this can be fixed after all.

I have not gone out and looked at mine to determine how it goes together. I am suspicious all that other stuff that appears to be part of it is actually the pin etc. that holds the two halves together (infeed/outfeed).

Let me know if pix of a disassembled one would help and if not too 'damaging' I will create them.

This last washer goes in as a snug fit when it was new it may have been pressed in
it's job seems to be to keep sawdust out it will work fine without it though.
