chuck key

i've got at least three different shopsmith chucks that take different keys,so my reccomendation would be to take the chuck with you to try the key first.

I was actually suggesting spending $40 for a new chuck and key...

I have to agree that another chuck seems to be overkill when you only NEED a key. I found Ace Hardware had one in their selection of chucks for about 3-4 bucks.JPG40504 wrote:IMHO getting a key is a more gooder goal. Just hate to not use what

But, but.... the new one is *so* shiny! I get what you are saying but then I started thinking of uses for two chucks... Maybe keeping one on a MT2 for turning.. Once the missing or a replacement key is located.

No doubt, could not get info from the Jacob's so I took my chuck with me to Home Depot first, they were resetting their tool section for Christmas and had all their chuck keys boxed up and the retail assistant stated "sorry, I guess I will have to turn you away." Did not even offer to look, so I went to Lowe's and found a Jacob's 13cm key that fit the chuck for $1.97. Needless to say I bought two...bobgroh wrote:The SS chuck uses a standard Jacobs chuck key. I have an old Mark V with what appears to be the same Cushman chuck pictured in the original post. Since no one has mentioned a size in two pages of posts, I ended up with a Jacob's 1/2" key with 9/32 pilot (size KK) that fits perfectly.
My local big box only had keys in assortment boxes or as a 4 sided deal and it turned out they wouldn't have fit anyway. I had put the chuck in my car to try different keys at the store and it ended up kicking around in there a few weeks when I didn't find a match. By chance I found myself in a shop with lots of drill presses and found a match later. Luckily it was a Jacobs and had the letter code on it, so I could order one.
