Thanks - I'll look for a copy of that Wood issue. Where did you get the vice that you mounted?

LP very nice work! I'm jealous as I don not have such a nice work surface. Curious where you found the hardboard and the roll of paper. What kind is it and what did it cost ect. I think thats a great idea with a new bench, wouldn't want to mess it all up right off the bat! .
A workbench needs to be in my immediate future.

For the paper I would think 'butcher' paper would be ideal(non-porus).

Its cool to see someone build the same project that I did. I used the same basic plans but changed it ever so slightly....

Mine does not have casters on it and the top is a solid core door... I also did not have a vice to add and made mine the proper height for me to sit and work at...I cant help it... I'm lazy and prefer to sit when I work.

I really like yours...very crisp and clean!

I saw copies of the June/July 2005 Wood on E-Bay (issue#163) that includes the work bench...what's funny is I noticed that in November 2005 (issue #166) the cover article is a similar work bench:

It's probably past time for me to just invest in the Wood DVD for $150, rather than buy random back issues but it's always easier at the time to buy the specific issue of interest.

Yes that last sentence could be 'seen' as 'snarky', but, tis the intent of the 'snarker' that matters, not the reaction of an 'observer'. The 'intent' was to 'elucidate'!:)

Thanks again for all of the positive comments regarding this project. I am always impressed with how each of us can take a set of plans and change them to fit our own needs.

I purchased the vise from Harbor Freight about 15 years ago. It was on a stationary bench in previous shop.

If I had to do it again, I would probably purchase the vise recommended in the Wood magazine article. They recommend a Shop Fox quick release vise, Model #G9851 for $69.95. This can be purchased through Grizzly Industrial. Please note this article is 8 years old, so I would guess the price has gone up. Plus, in 8 years I am sure there are a number of new vises out there.

I purchased the 1/4" tempered hardboard from the local lumber yard. If memory serves me correctly, it was about $15.

The butcher paper roll holder was about $30, Model #18100-A500 and a roll of 30"x800', 50#butcher paper was a little under $40. Both items came from POSpaper.com. I don't think the shipping was excessive.

I have read in other forums where other people have used rosin paper instead of the butcher paper. Rosin paper is used as floor underlayment and can be purchased from Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. I understand the main advantage to rosin paper is that it won't let water, glue, etc. through to the workbench.

Snarky:

2. Rudely sarcastic or disrespectful; snide.
3. Irritable or short-tempered; irascible.

The adjective snarky is first recorded in 1906. It is from dialectal British snark, meaning 'to nag, find fault with'

I guess it depends on which definition you use. He did receive a few comments that fit into #1, but those same comments don't fit into #2 or #3.

Great looking workbench! I have been combing through different pubs combining different designs and ideas trying to come up with an design that incorporates everything I want in a workbench. Hopefully get it built sometime this year. Keep up the good work!
