I haven't noticed a crown. But then again, I didn't pay attention. It's that the urethane tires work so well (at least for me), that I would have them as standard equipment for the bandsaw.

The SS upper wheel is not only NOT crowned, but is beveled and canted.

Perhaps a bit of 'research' of the SS uniqueness will help prevent further confusion.

The tires are 'flat'.

The lower wheel is also beveled and I think is canted as well.


Perhaps Dusty can verify/discount the lower wheel cant with his trusty wixey.

I have been using urethane tires for my band saw after replacing the worn out rubber tires. They are more resistant to abuse and has a better grip on the blades. Quite easy to install and doesn't need any adhesive.

How do you conclude that they have a "better grip on the blade"?

I don't mean to be challenging your opinions about the urethane tires as I have no experience. I am still running on 25 year old rubber tires. I am just curious.

The urathane tires that ShopSmith sells have horrible reviews on the website. Why do you think this is? Everyone here seems to like them.

I have noticed that too and don't have a complete explanation. There are four reviews. One is positive. Three are negative. While all are from 2011-2012, one says his tires were about 5 years old when they fell off. That puts them right in the period when Shopsmith sent out a batch of incorrectly sized tires that admittedly fell off the wheels. So that might account for one of the negative reviews. Of the remaining two negatives, another says they are falling off but you can't tell when they were installed. The last negative one one says they melted, and I've never heard of that!

But clearly the responses in this thread from those that have 'em is overwhelmingly positive.

Yes, I had to replace a set of the Shopsmith installed orange tires that the saw blade melted somewhat into the tires. The saw blade got too hot while cutting hardwood and the user was not paying attention to what he was doing. Also the heat appears to have lengthen the tires as they came off very easy. I did install a set of black tires for replacements as it appears they can handle the extreme blade heat much better. However, I am using the orange tires as replacements these days.

Thank you Bill! I almost ordered the urathane tires yesterday but wanted to wait for a response. I'll definitely be ordering them today

NOT me!
The orange jobs looked okay when new, but they soon self-destructed when a I crashed a blade. Or I should rather say 'after'. They in turn crashed another blade and scared the poop outta me in the process.
There was more to it but I don't remember the details. Suffice it to say I was dissatisfied- fairly I think- and vowed to stay with the rubbers.
[You may ask why I changed in the first place? Stupidity. SS had accidentally sent me a new pair of the urethanes and told me to just keep 'em, save postage. So I "took advantage" of the "freebie"! The oldies were fine. D'ya hear the "Dragnet" music playin in the background? "Dumb, du dumb dumb."]
