This site has a few ideas.

I grew up with bird feeders all around now the only reason I don't put them out now is that I would just be feeding the cats around here.

I’ve been concerned with this as well; along with squirrels and raccoons.

Casting about I’ve learned that placement is the key. So now I’m trying to figure out ways to suspend them from high, narrow tree limbs to make them more difficult for other critters to reach. (Not easy since I can’t reach them myself.)

As squirrels can still get to those it’s important to make sure the entrance is too small for them to get inside.

I’ve made a feeder that I plan to surround with chicken wire, but raccoons are pretty tough customers, so I’m not so sure that’ll be enough to keep them out. I might try to be selective about what I put inside. I’ll look for things that raccoons aren’t interested to eat.

I found a tip on keeping squrrels etc out of bird seed. Some sell a slinky type system that goes round the pole for x amount of dollars. You can go to the dollar store a lot cheaper and purchase one.

Will water soak into the end grain of the ply wood?

How did you finish it , paint ,,,, varnish or a plastic ?

I need to research ways to keep snakes away from bird houses. Has become a big problem the last few years.

I hate snakes!!

We get them around here in the spring , I took a 5 gallon bucket with out the lid one year put a little grass in the bottom ,,dug a hole and buried it in the ground and covered it with a couple big flat rocks with just enough room for them to crawl under , they fell into the bucket.

After a while I just gave up,,, they won ,,,,,they are many ,,,,, I am only one.

The wood is flat cut pine, no plywood involved. The finish was spar varnish.
