I received a set of the black ones as well, they did not fit. Have you tried yours?
At a later point they found a supplier and they sent me replacements for the non-fitting black ones.
I liked the idea of using a stepped dowel for our hand built design, be fun to turn on the lathe too.

I have tried them and they seem to fit fine. To be honest, I have not used them with a router bit. As I recall when I received my Sawtrain at the end of 2008, the inserts were not with it. They were shipped early in 2009.
Do you remember what the problem with the fit was, Ed? Maybe there is something that I am missing.

The pins were to tight. If you got them in then getting them back out was an even bigger issue. The pins would pull back out of the block....
I had been in contact with them and he shipped me out a set just "after they got them working" so he was quite surprised by my call saying they didn't fit. They were hand making them at their shop and my guess was lack of any quality control on what was being sent out.
I still have them packed away and I think I could fix them if push came to shove and I never did use them for any routing.
If memory serves me it came with yellow colored inserts, at another point I got a batch that were gray and another group that were orange.... If I can I'll move the stuff from in front of box tomorrow and see what I have in storage.

On your black inserts, were the pins separate pieces inserted into the blocks?
My black inserts are made from a solid piece of plastic. They slide easily into the fence.
The yellow one pictured I have labeled as original so that is the color of the first batch I got. I have that as a plain insert and don't plan to cut it up. The other batches I can't remember the order of, but I do know one of them was before the black ones and other was after.
You can see that on mine the plugs pull out. Didn't know they made some one piece blocks....

Imagine my embarrassment , my plugs pull out also. After looking at your picture, I took a pair of pliers and gently removed one.
I only have the 6 black inserts, but feel that making them in a similar fashion out of wood should not be a real stretch. Gene, if you would like to use one of my inserts as a sample, let me know.
I also like the sacrificial fence halves approach. It certainly would be easier than making the inserts.

Thanks for the offer, Ed. I think I can just use the one's I have for a model. After seeing the black one, it doesn't look too difficult.
