Vermont Columns

Post by redleg »

I haven't actually been to that church but I was born about 50 miles from there as the crow flies. Nearly 100 miles by a good road or in Vermont "you can't get there from here" especially if it's mud season.

I've used a live center stuck in a hole drilled in a wall for 8 foot stock but only 4 inch. 12 inch green, either crazy or real big ones.

OK, that guy is CRAZY!!

The center "Shopsmith" is just the stands, 4 tubes, and a carriage. He didn't mention that being attached to ANYTHING. I'm assuming the casters are not there, or are retracted, but still. That thing could slide right in to his work, catch and mess up the whole rig.

And, 250 RPM is too fast for that.

I'm not planning on anything larger than a 6X6, doing anything longer than standard ER length. (I may go a few inches longer, but I've got power from 40 RPM to 6000.)

Crazy? Perhaps.

But he got it done!

He 'adapted' to the task at hand!

Technique not recommended for the faint at heart!;)

Right, 250 rpm was too fast but it's the slowest I could get with the powerpro. I've made several cant hook handles and other stuff that required a longer bed. The simplest way is to drill a 5/8 inch hole in the wall at spindle level and jam in a cup or live center. Just reverse the stock to work on the other end. Another way is in the youtube reference above and another way is to use another shopsmith bed with the tail stock reversed so you don't have to remove the motor assembley.

Nice projects on your timetofiddle website. The post turning on you tube is awesome but I'm glad I don't need one. I also have found that using the second headstock works great. I use a live center on the second Shopsmith just to clarify for others. The Burlington Vermont Craiglist ad was lengthy but it must help sell with 60 of them gone to new homes. Good to see you on the forum.

The columns presented several unanticipated challenges so success was more rewarding. I didn't get or expect pay for them. People have thanked me for the detail in the ads especially since some have never heard of a shopsmith. I don't spend much time on forums/blogs - it cuts into time making shavings. Am working on a big natural edge black locust bowl now but at -10 F outside heating the shop takes a lot more wood.

Has anyone ever tried purchasing a set of longer and possibly thicker walled tubes to extend the SS ?
