The stock was of uniform thickness, I believe now it was my technique. Using the saw blade as if it were a dado blade left just wasnt as accurate as it probably could have been. I was most likely in to much of a hurry and didnt set the vertical height correctly and was rushing to make my cuts. I also didnt make a test fit.
Lesson learned, use a drill bit or router bit to get accurate height adjustment of the blade, and a test piece.

Al, I've found a few plan sets for the type of jig you referenced, I will be building one sometime this week and plan on trying again.

Finish applied, two coats. Let the caning begin, and it will continue until moral improves.

Finally got some batteries for the camera, here are the finished photos. Fun project. I have recently purchased a jointer and have been experimenting with squaring stock, that will not be an issue in the future. I can see a few more of these chairs being built, I enjoy the caning and the look.
