The stock was of uniform thickness, I believe now it was my technique. Using the saw blade as if it were a dado blade left just wasnt as accurate as it probably could have been. I was most likely in to much of a hurry and didnt set the vertical height correctly and was rushing to make my cuts. I also didnt make a test fit.
Lesson learned, use a drill bit or router bit to get accurate height adjustment of the blade, and a test piece.
Al, I've found a few plan sets for the type of jig you referenced, I will be building one sometime this week and plan on trying again.
