A while back I converted a old SS into a dedicated drill press. After the short time I have used it I think the custom base is the best solution for my limited space. As for the head stock lift I have started but not completed a lift using a threaded rod and a garage sale find 3/8 variable speed reversible drill to turn the rod.https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=14400

Use couplers for the sliding nut(longer threads for wear).

I like the extension table support right where it is!

I would be very concerned about the center of gravity (about its' stability). With the headstock raised, it is very tall with a very small footprint.

I did a tip test on my decanted drill perss using a 30# scale and compared the results to a Central Machinery floor model drill press. the results are in post 11. The test showed the modified SS is more stable than the floor model drill press.https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=14400

Most floor model drill presses have a very small footprint. They also have holes for anchoring.
