Fitz, no one mentioned this, but protect your way tubes from the dust off of that wheel. (I'd just throw a scrap piece of carpet over the way tubes.) Also, consider some kind of enclosure for that wheel, just to keep flying dust/steel from flying around.

Also, you've got speed control over the wheel. No use rushing something, if you don't need to, if you can see where I'm going. (At low enough speeds, an enclosure doesn't need to withstand a wheel coming apart.)

I would never have thought of the rug idea, that's great. I've been wondering about how to make a sturdy enough guard cheaply enough, the slower speed will be a help.

Well, I got an 8" white norton wheel, 150 grit. Far too fine for many things it seems but A) it was only $22 when the rest were a bunch more. I got it knowing I'll want to get a blue 3X wheel later and thinking this will be OK for light, patient use on chisels, plane blades etc. I'll watch the heat very carefully since the heat/fine grit connection. With the other things I needed I didn't have enough for a 3x right now, nor even a coarser white wheel, so I am hoping this is better than none.

I do have the belt grinder for more significant shaping until I get a better wheel.

Neat project (in the other thread). That's a great idea to easily mount/remove on the SS. How is it working for you? Anything you'd do different if you were to start over?

I'm trying to figure out something different. I was in an Alan Lacer class last Fall, he showed his sharpening technique and I'm sold on using wheels, however, I don't know where I'd try to fit in a dedicated grinder. I bought barely used Jet midi lathe and a bunch of chisels for a good price, some of them, I think, will not sharpen well using the SS's guide.

Hi Roy,

It actually works very well and I leave it on while turning a bowl or what ever it may be and can touch up the chisels as needed while turning. Even at a speed of only 600 to 900 rpm it works great. I have found the best tip I have gotten about turning is keeping them sharp and it is definately true.
