There are a number of things I like about Facebook, like keeping up with distant family and several things I don't like, like keeping up with distant family.

Right now the thing I dislike the most is the way FB is consuming my bandwidth. I have a Verizon broadband WIFI hot-spot account that carries a 5 gig a month data limit. It was fine for years but it has not kept up with the huge increase in videos being posted on the net. We used to use around 4 gigs between my wife and I and an occasionally visiting grandson. Mostly we just don't view very many videos. I keep my browser sat so that "normal" videos show as blank and I must click to activate Flash.
The Verizon service has been pretty good and plenty fast enough but too limiting. Not a lot of choice in my rural location. AT&T promised DSL "any day now" starting about 6 years ago...

More recently Facebook changed things and now anytime we open the feed (news feed) all of those videos that people post not only show but each one of them sits there loading even when they do not show on the screen. If I click off to another group page there or someplace else and click back all of those videos reload in the back ground again and again even though I don't look at any of them. I do have it sat so that none of them self start. After they did that bandwidth usage went way up. I have Googled myself silly looking for a fix but all I find is other folks trying to stop them too but no one has a good answer yet. My longer term answer is going to be dropping the Verizon account for something else. My most recent contract is about far enough along to get out of it without a big penalty. I always like the WIFI hotspot because we could take it along especially camping or traveling but our smart phones can serve a lot of that use now. Currently if we want to see some video we mostly just watch it on our phones which are unlimited. Kind of a pain at times. I want to be able to feel free to watch "How to" videos etc.

One of the most silly things I see on Facebook is all of that posting things about leaving on trips giving schedule times and who will be checking the house and when...

Sounds like facebook is digging through your wallet, I think I would just walk away quietly and do without. IMHO

Dusty, I "liked" the page, but you don't know me! LOL

I don't post personal stuff on facebook. Really only immediate family and friends that I have as "friends". I resisted it for a while, but when my dad was sick, he liked farmville, so I joined to give him some entertainment. Least I could do in his last days.

I no longer play farmville or any other facebook games. LOL

Some family members do a good job of posting little snippets that do keep us tied together since I am not real close to the cousins etc.

But since then, I do have a "business page" which I do post new products, product news etc. Since it is a lot easier to do than post little snippets on than my webpage, I have neglected my "news page" on my website. I think I do need to resume posting there though because as illustrated here (and elsewhere) not everybody is keen on facebook. I had already came to that conclusion but this post has politely reminded me of it. LOL Sometimes we forget that there are different strokes for different folks.

I still like Betty White's comment about facebook.

"What a terrible waste of time!"

Then there is linkedin for 'professionals'!

Same thing only worse!

some could argue that posting in a forum with people that you have never met, nor will likely ever meet is a time waster also......

Some would say it is a great source of information from like minded individuals.

I agree with the later.

Yep... Main advice is inform yourself and talk about trips etc. after you get home, not before or while away.

Never type in a browser or post on the internet what you don't want the whole world to know. Expect NO privacy anywhere on the internet. Additionally that data will live forever, there is NO delete for data posted on the internet. This includes email BTW which is far less secure than other forms of communication.

This is not just social media, but all data posted, stored, derived, interpreted or accumulated.

Every mouse click is tracked by most commercial sites, especially ads. I'm not saying don't use the Internet, just be aware that there is absolutely no privacy. Even if a site says "this is private". For example the "Private Messages" on this very forum; there is nothing private about them. They are stored on the database that is used to manage the site and is accessible. They can even be searched by anyone/thing with access to the database.

Forget about privacy in the information age, it does not exist.

I agree totally. However where you post does make a difference. It is one thing to post on the Shopsmith forum it is an entirely different matter posting on Facebook.

Both have security issues and everyone can see it. But I believe it is far more likely info will be harvested from Facebook for nefarious reasons than from this Shopsmith forum.
