Does Everyone Know
that there is a new Shopsmith site. Actually, there is more than one. I don't see evidence that anyone whose name I know has checked in there yet.

Yes I know about the site but in order to access it I would have to join one of the social media sites and that is something I really don't want to do. My wife uses Facebook but after some of the recent revelations about the data mining and secret reaction tests used to get people's reactions to news stories I will leave well enough alone for now.
In my opinion these sites have betrayed the trust that people have given them and I really don't trust any of them.
As I tell most people "I don't text, I don't face and I don't twit".
It will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

PS Too bad cause it looks like a decent site.

I understand what you are saying but at the same time "I do not understand".
What makes you feel safe logging in here? This is online media too.
You do not reveal your full name, age, address, telephone number, SSAN, etc but I know your name, approximately where you live, what you did for a living and maybe more if I did some mining.
We must face the fact that we are no longer living in small town Americana. The big city and the age of technology has overcome.
When you go into a familiar super market, do you know what direction you are most likely to go? Your grocery store manager does. When they begin having that much data about us, we all have to be concerned.
When I go to the nearest filling station, almost as soon as I start pumping gas, I hear a voice talking to me on a speaker at the pump. Not just talking but greeting me by name. Scarey.

I don't hear things on the nightly news about this site using NSA styled data mining techniques or posting false stories in order to see how the forum members react to negative or positive reports. It has been admitted to by the opeators of Facebook and other sites. I know how they track each keystroke and track the sites you visit.
All my wife has to do is use my computer for one of her internet sessions and I am inundated with sewing machine adverts!!
Any way I still believe that the Social Media sites are more intrusive than I care for.
I'll take a pass for now.

PS If you do a call sign search through the FCC or another search engine You can probably glean a bit more info.

Has anyone really figured out how exactly facebook works. Exactly what information is shared and what information is not shared? And who decides who gets the information.wa2crk wrote:Dusty

My wife has a facebook account and what a mess it is filled with ads, stupid things no one would ever care about. I closed it down as best I can but so far I think her account is still there.
Which leads me to my other concern it seems like facebook is a big secret. To find out about it you have sign in and then it is too late. Sort of like here if you want to know how this car drives take it for a test drive but there is a catch you have to buy before you can test drive it.
That tells me someone is doing something they don't want me to know about.

Yes, it is still there. You deactivated it. You did not delete it. There is no traffic on it but it is still there. You can log in and you will be welcomed back to Facebook.
Huh?? Not on your life!

I could write a book on the things social media can do to a family. It's really a scary thing if you sit down and think of all the possibilities. This is a special interest forum, facebook is a gossip page. I don't think any perverts are going to come on here and pose as Shopsmith owners to get in our childrens pants........but you never know ?
I have checked it out on Facebook but so far it seems like little other than a place holder. There doesn't seem to be any activity by Shopsmith over there other than recycling some old project plans from Hands On. If and when when Shopsmith starts creating new content over there I will pay it some more attention.dusty wrote:that there is a new Shopsmith site. Actually, there is more than one. If I recall correctly someone on this forum a while back said that he posted an old family photo on one of the Social Media Sites and the site identified each of the people in the photo. Appaently they are using some kind of facial recognition software to identify by comparing the pic to other posts.
Don't even know why they think they have a right to do anything like that.
Still not going there.

Come on now! You can't really believe that? I view family pictures on FB rather frequently and I see those name tags. They only show up if someone fills the tag that displays when you hover on someones image.
Take your own photo image and place it on FB. When you view it, it will not identify you. If someone later views it, hovers on your image and gives that face a name (yours or someone else's) it will then be tagged.
No facial recognition software involved. I don't care what someone on the Shopsmith Forum (or FB) told you. And you can disable the tags if you like.
