Re: Jointer Blades
The blade is 1/8" thick and tapers to 7/64" on the sharp edge.
I don't know what is so unique about the blades that they could not be sharpened by someone who does this sort of work. However, you will not likely find anyone other than Shopsmith where you can buy new blades.
Did you get an email from me regarding your dilemma. I have the jig and a conical disk. You are welcome to contact me to make some arrangements to come here and sharpen them.

Re: Jointer Blades
Dusty,
Many thanks...I would love to come by. Never having done this before I will require your guidance...lots of it.
As an aside, I haven't been here in a bit and was surprised by the new format. Insofar as pictures are concerned, it doesn't seem to be functioning that well. Hello, ShopSmith...are you home?

I can assure you Admin is very much alert to what has occurred the past few days. The display of pix has been evolving. Perhaps it blew up on him!gr8mesquite wrote:Dusty,

No doubt in my mind it will all settle out given time.
You were not the only one 'surprised".

Re: Jointer Blades
Check your phone book. There is likely a shop near you that sharpens blades. When mine got dull, I looked in my phone book and found a guy a mile from my house. He sharpened my jointer blades for a few bucks and my 12" planer blades for only a little more.

Re: Jointer Blades
The blades are actually fairly easy to sharpen (if you have a Tormek, which I do). What I find a *itch is reinstalling them properly!
Re: Jointer Blades
Rather than sharpening (if the blades are only nicked, but otherwise sharp) you can re-align the blades by moving two of the blades, one slightly right and another left, the raised lines on the wood will not show.
Another way is to sharpen them yourself on the Shopsmith using a conical disk sander and a sharpening jig. Both sold by Shopsmith.

Here's a good video on that subject: http://www.finewoodworking.com/workshop ... g-jig.aspx
I stopped at Harbor Freight today and bought 6 perfect sized magnets for $3

Re: Jointer Blades
I watched the video and I like the jig. I find that the blades on the Shopsmith jointer do not react quite like shown in the video but I might not have had them loose enough. If the magnets will pull the blade up as shown in the video, this is a good procedure and jig for setting the blades so as to be coplanar with the outfeed table.gr8mesquite wrote:ChrisNeilan wrote:The blades are actually fairly easy to sharpen (if you have a Tormek, which I do). I would have to use a .002" spacer under the magnets to set my blades the way I want them (slightly above the outfeed table).
Very good information.
If you do this with a Shopsmith jointer, do not forget the depth adjustment screws. You will want to pull those up to the bottom edge of the blade without moving the blade. Tightening the wedges will also be a trick. The wedges will tend to relocate your blades as you attempt to secure them.
