Nice work, ol' buddy!
If you think the finish is too glossy try sanding the finish with 400 grit, then 600 grit sandpaper. I remember an article from a couple years ago that said by using sandpaper, you can make a duller finish out of gloss. The problem, as I remember is you're supposed to sand between coats, but you can try sanding the project by coating another piece (hopefully scrap) with 3 coats then sand.

I rubbed it between coats with and after the final coat an extra fine sanding foam but not too hard as the wipe-on finish is pretty thin. I might try using 0000 steel wool but am still wary of rubbing too much.

In addition to the installation holes on the front, I routed a couple of keyhole slots on the back as an alternative installation method

In future editions I might eliminate the screw holes in the front and only
go with the keyhole slots, though they do add a bit of a design element.
The other piece I was working on could not be salvaged but did serve to practice my keyhole slots and will also allow me to practice putting a rounded face on the front.
Too bad my pictures are not too good. I`m sure it would have looked better on a wall

Consider going 'vertical' with those slots(wide[entry/exit] hole 'down').

Good idea. It certainly would offer more grip on the screw holding it in place.

The Christmas present was finally delivered on Friday. My grandson sent me a pic of it installed yesterday

As you can see, it even handles "keyless car fobs", sitting on top. He seems happy with it, but not happy enough to open the bottle of port I gave him with it to make up for the delay.
