Finally I got back around to what should have been a very simple job. I did mess up a key measurement by using the worn end of a vintage square !?! Oh well, I recovered OK....

The shelf-pins in the walls of the cabinet necessitated some reliefs in the shelf undersides, which I decided to make with butternut scrap I had:

I used a nice plane and my shoot-board to trim each shelf to length and square the ends:

Here is the trial fit of 3 shelves. I'll probably make one more for flexibility:


Here is the cabinet waxed on the outside!

Is it too soon to be thinking of Spring?

I lately visited the niece from the thread prior.... her wall cabinet is full of girly things...




Now I'm just beginning to do something for the next Niece in line... starting from the drawers and then hopefully fitting things around them...

Winter won't last long, hopefully!

I did a little more work on the next Wall cabinet for the next Niece today. I had some fiddle-pattern maple which I was planing to remove "Pringles" bows and twists. Then I decided they were flat enough to start making some mortise relief-cuts with a Forstner bit.

The PowerPro stopped having the "Speed Down" button work on me. There was one other time many months ago this happened, and it recovered. Today I couldn't get the button to respond for love or money. Speaking of money, I looked up the price of a new Control Panel, and it was $566 ! So I did a brief inspection and then just left to do other stuff. Came back and it still wouldn't work. I finally tried stepping through a bunch of preset speeds and other operations. At some point, after having run a 2000rpm speed preset, and then Reversing direction, the Speed Down button started working 100% perfectly again! I did power-cycles and everything after that, and it has stayed "good". So my 5-1/2 year old PowerPro is still going strong.

Getting back to Forstner-drilling reliefs for future mortises, that basic work is visible here on the underside of the "top" fiddle maple slab: Stay warm,

Boy, I can really procrastinate on real projects, when there's so many forums, hand-tool swapping, and other quick-gratification things to do!

I cut some lateral boards and made dowel junctions for all of them today. Right now everything is oversized and most dimensions will come down a tad as I confirm drawer fits, proportions, etc. This the bare bones. Lateral middle shelves are just doweled, but the top and bottom fiddle-maple slabs will use mortises before it's all over.

And a little more progress.... all dowel-joints are now done and glued. The plywood back has a nice veneer of Walnut for presentation.... Now I have about 6 fewer individual parts to keep track of, since they're together forever!

While the 2 drawers were always targeted for final location, I did some trial and error on what to do with the other compartments. My niece wants some open shelves but others closed. Here is my last iteration which I'll go with:

The upper door system isn't attached yet, but otherwise it's about ready. The SS Router in horizontal mode was useful for cutting matched hinge recesses!
