Cutting wood is against the teeth, does it dull your blade? It does mine!!!!!

I wonder how much 'microscopic' wear is created by ripping a foot or two of 3/4" MDF. ;)

With MDF, how does one determine if they are ripping or cross-cutting? :confused: ;) :D

JPG,
there is so much adhesives in MDF, particle board, OSB, ect that Freud makes specialized blades for them, some have up to 30% adhesives in them. A few years ago I made some tables, the legs were Cherry with a glued in strip, 1/4" of walnut running down the center. B4 running them on the jointer, I cleaned off all glue, after 16 legs, I had a nick in my jointer blades where the glue joint was.

Let's see.

A saw blade at 3500 rpm is traveling at about 152 feet/second(about 106 miles/hour) as it cuts the wood.

A brass brush cleaning the teeth is traveling at say an inch or two per second.


Hardly a reasonable comparison to establish an answer to a question. :)

When 'ripping' one uses a 'rip' fence.

When 'cross-cutting' one uses a miter gauge or a cross cut sled. ;)

i.e. Grain direction(which MDF has none) is not necessarily relevant.

Also I do not recommend attempting cross cutting a foot or two. :eek:

This discussion began with blade cleaners and potential 'damage' caused by cleaning potions.

This discussion has expanded greatly to make a previous point by grossly extrapolating pertinent details and going off in irrelevant directions.

No one disputes the wear caused by that stuff used as binders etc.

My point was that microscopic erosion caused by those potions is likely miniscule compared to the wear caused by that foot or two of 'stuff'. i.e. true perhaps, but is it really significant enough to be concerned about?

Like the brush/wood comparison, relative magnitude cannot be ignored.
