Was it with that single flute champfer bit in the pic? If so I could see that, that is why I asked.

Since rotating it a 1/4 turn cured it, the collet has to also be out of balance.

And I did about 10' of 5/16" deep rabbit. All of the above was in poplar. Except as noted in the original post, I've had no problems.

I would be more concerned with the lifetime of the bearings in the router. The second photo shows what appears to be the cutting flute of the bit almost over the set screw. This would put a lot of weight on the set screw side of the collet. Turning the bit 1/4 turn may have had the effect of distributing the weight more effectively and reduce the vibration to some extent but it still looks like the whole assembly would still be inherently out of balance. All this at 25000 RPM?? I dunno!

If you look closely at the pics, you can see that it is a normal two-wing bit. The wing on the far side almost disappears against the background of the clear plastic chip guard, but it is there.

I see that it is a two flute bit even so if the diameter running through the wings of the cutter was perpendicular to the diameter running through the screw there is still a void 180 deg opposite the screw which will still cause an imbalance. There is no counterweight for the mass of the screw.

Maybe replacing the split ring And screw with a tapered nut.

Add a slot on the end so it could be 'tooled' with a screw driver from the bit end.

i.e. Go back to a sane design. JMHO
