Today in the shop (holey cutting board Batman)

Age doesn't cause rust, Dennis.
No, wait......maybe it does. At 75, I'm getting a bit rusty.

This discussion got me curious about why wood might promote rust. After all, there is humidity in the air as well. So I Googled it, and found this obscure article by a museum conservator of furniture and woodwork. It turns out that wood releases acetic acid as a natural part of its aging process. Oak is one of the worst offenders, and kiln-dried wood releases more acid than air-dried wood. Who knew?

I think the close fit(like a bit shank in a tight hole) allows any moisture(or other waste products from the wood) to remain trapped so as to prolong it's effect.

Acetic acid - learned my new thing fer today already.

BD, I think the rust comes from tanins in the wood more so then moisture.

My first thought was add fishing line loops to one end, to use as Christmas tree ornaments.
Of course maybe that idea came from
A) not enough sleep
or
B) rusty (or crusty) with age

Is it a badge of honor being born before dirt was invented??

195 holes today. Did the 1/4" version and it it is ready to have me clear out a drawer and start putting bits in. I cut yesterdays to size as well so I soon will have a couple of drawers of bits.

Now it TV time for the rest of the night. So soon I'll get to the hard part of finding all the bits and fitting them in the holes, after cleaning out two drawers, the later being the hardest part.

I spent a little time adding bits of the 1/2" shank type to the newly emptied drawer. I think I'm over half full at this point. Shot a picture before I closed up shop for the night.
