How about a stiff/tight weaved cloth that is treated, I mean in WW11, the British Spitfire had cloth wings that were coated with a stiffner.
I made many a mini plane the same thing, coat with Dope, dries and tighten then, paint. But those were air plane wings.

Go to local lumber yard and get two door skins. They will work perfectly. Last time I bought them they were cheap. They will Add rigidity and protection to the whole thing. Door skins are 1/8 or less thick
Fairly easy to work with and seem made to perfectly glue to wood frames. I guess it all comes from their name "door skins"

I like this idea but it seems that this is no long something places here carry or they know it by another name??? Lowe's use to have some but I guess they no longer do? I find it hard to believe as I've seen this stuff in the past but, what is going on?

I think you need a builders supply or lumber store. I don't think the big boxes carry them
