On my second build one of the washers somehow managed to get stuck in the wrong place when I was trying to slide the headstock back on the machine.... couldn't figure out why it wasn't just slipping back on and I couldn't rotate the wedge to fix it.

It went through the washer. The washer was in correctly but the spiral had a long thin section on the end. I am not sure if the spiral was cut incorrectly or just had a section that was bad. Once it got caught it started to pull the rest. I replaced it with a section of split tubing that I use as an edge/blade protector.

What I notice in the pix is that the wedges are maxed out AWAY from the way tubes. If the carriage is 'stuck', it is not the wedges that are causing it.

It appears the left hand threads were good enough to cause the rod to shear.

I believe I do have a broken carriage lock on my 510. The table does not move either direction; doesn't move a hair. The carriage lever moves back and forth as before, but feels "different". Does this sound like a carriage lock problem? If so, any suggestions on how to get it apart? If I can get it apart, is the following part what I need? 514335 Carriage Lock Assembly
Thanks,
Jim

First try pushing in and out on the knob/lever. The wedges tend to stick when worn.

As for taking it apart, the nut on the back end of the lock shaft can be removed. Take note of the sequence of parts along that shaft outside the rear retaining clip.

Pull the whole shebang out the front. The rear wedge and washer will remain in the bore. They can be pushed out towards the outer end.

Inspection time. Look for wear on the wedges. A flat file will eliminate the 'low' area. The angled wedge needs to be flat.

Pictures then will help us help you.

Another thing to look for is if one of the two rollpins near the front end is bent/sheared.

Also excessive buildup of hardened sawdust/oil/grease buildup.

I finally got around to tearing it apart. The wedge lock had a burr. I filed it off. The carriage locks and unlocks normally now, so hopefully that was the problem. Thanks for the help! Jim
