If I had to do it again (upgrade my 500), I would consider the 510, especially since you can find them readily on Ebay, and quite affordably as well. As it happens, I can swap my 520 fence between the two Shopsmiths and do not need a second fence.
Chris,

You want the 510 Fence on your 500 Table and couldn't spring for the 510 upgrade. Shopsmith thought of that some years ago.

Never indicated that I wanted the 510 fence on my 500 table. I upgraded to a 520. I prefer the 520 table and fence. For me it was the way to go for the projects I am involved with. I picked up the carriage and table for about $100 on eBay. I already had a Mark 7 so I could use the guards, extention tables and fence that I already have.
Wow Chris, you got a steal on a 520 main table with carriage all for $100! How long ago was that? You might be lucky to pay $150-200 alone for a 520 main table these days on ebay.

Cheers,
John

Thanks, John. Still on the lookout for a 510 or 520 table system.

I have been told when you can upgrade to the 2 bearing quill , I have been told it is much better then the old single bearing quill.

I started up grading my SS a couple years ago , buying things as I need it , just found out recently about the quill up grade, looks like a good investment. no I don't have one yet .

Also it looks like the fence attachments are different from the 500 and the newer tables,

My mortise hold down looks to mount different.
I think I will save the old table just for that reason
I found my 510 table on EBAY as well,,,, like new carriage and table less then 100.00 free shipping .

Unless ya want to buy new Ya just have to be patient.

Hobbyman, you are certainly correct that patience is important in finding a great deal. I need to develop more patience. :D

By the way, I was recently curious about quill bearings and in looking into it. Looks like an easy enough job to replace. Video link, in case you have not seen it, here: http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... gquill.htm

This is a pretty good deal if completely moving from a 500 table system to a 510. Remember that you really want a complete set as you can be assured that the table system that you receive was produced as a whole and with similar tolerances. Just make sure you check with the buyer that it is in fact one complete system that came as a package. From the pictures, it looks to be in good functional condition.

Mixing and matching should theoretically make no difference, but I have not found that to be the case with my systems. It's always better to have a whole setup instead of something that was pieced together from different systems so it would be worth the extra bit of money to pull together the whole thing.

The shipping on the above package might be pretty killer though. But considering the MS is charging close to $1400 for the same package not including shipping... Honestly, doubt you'll find a cheaper package any time soon that doesn't require quite a bit of elbow grease to clean up and salvage.

Happy hunting!

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the link, John. Little pricey for me. There is an early nineties 510 complete SS about 280 miles from me that the asking price is $800. Also comes with a brand new bandsaw never taken out of box. SS was used very little. Very tempting.

Haha, of course another way is to get the whole kit and kaboodle. There are definitely people selling old 510 systems that don't know their real worth who are definitely selling them for very good prices. :)

Very tempting indeed. I would probably purchase the whole system and then you'd have the original one to mainly run SPTs as long as you were not space constrained.

280 miles is a bit of a stretch, but you could make it a pleasant day trip. :)

Cheers,
John

If upgrading to a 510 be aware there are two versions.
