I know this is an old post, but thought this might help someone if they have a stuck fan sheave.
We recently moved and the legs on one of my Shopsmiths got a little bent. I have been watching my local classified add where I found this poor abused machine. The owner only wanted $25, which in hindsight was probably $25 too much. In any case I have been slowly tearing this thing down. Every single setscrew and moving part has been a chore to remove. Copious amounts of PB blaster, Evaporust baths, and not so gentle persuasion with a dead blow hammer have been required.
When I got to the motor, the sheaves were of course bonded together. I was able to get the floating sheave off with a three jaw puller (courtesy of Harbor Freight). Sadly, the fan sheave would not budge (and yes I removed the set screw). The three jaw puller is too thick to get under the fan sheave so I came up with this solution. I cleaned off the spindle and set the floating sheave back on. I then got some table top fasteners left over from a previous project, and found that by bolting them together I could make small clamps to hold the fan sheave and floating sheave together. They were just thin enough to fit under the lip of the fan sheave. With the three jaw puller I was able to get the fan sheave to lift a little bit. Unfortunately, the bolts I used to hold the table top fasteners together started to bend and pop off. With the space gained, I was able to attach some more robust bolts to hold the fan sheave and floating sheave together ( I wrapped a strand of wire to keep the bolts in place). With this set up I was able to get the stuck fan sheave off, and begin the motor disassembly.
