Fan Sheave Removal

Ok this goes in line with my last post. I need to remove the fan sheave from the motor so I can clean everything out. The motor runs good no squealing or other noises just want to ensure I clean everything out good. I want to try all options before I use to much force and bend the sheave.

BE CAREFUL. That spring packs a lot of energy even when it at it's maximum length on the motor shaft. There is a spring removal tool that is shown in Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone on the Shopsmith website. Even with the tool a second person is recommended to remove the spring safely. Then the fan sheave can be remove by reaching behind the sheave and there is a set screw that takes the 5/32 allen wrench to remove it. It is very tight and the sheave has a good possibility of being stuck on the shaft and may require some kind of puller to remove it.

Thanks I used the board to remove the spring and the floating sheave. I will look tonight for the set screw to remove the fan sheave.

Thanks for the information to look for the 5/32 nut. When I posted Sunday night the last thing I did was remove the motor from the pan. I didn't take time to look for it. I went straight to the nut tonight after removing the nut the fan sheave slid right off. Thanks again always get info from this forum.

You need to say 10 hail Marys. It usually does NOT 'slide straight off'.



BTW that is a set screw, not a nut.

Thanks! So far no serious issues with any of the tear down something will seriously impede progress though always works out that way.
