60 Hz current will flow through the conductor(s).

Soldering is not necessarily the best. Crimping provides a much more secure connection and is electrically as good as soldering. Vibrations will cause the solder to crack and degrade the joint.

Case in point. In my 24 years in the Air Force (FWIW, I have been retired for 21 years) we went from a lot of soldered connections on aircraft to almost exclusively crimped connections for pins in Cannon plugs. The F-16 is all crimped except for what are called wafer connectors. They are like cell phone connectors only not nearly so small. They are too small to crimp. They require a very special soldering technique that uses hot air to melt the solder. All the wire is stranded, back to the B-52H (55 years old) aircraft I maintained.

There is nothing wrong with crimping as long as it is properly done as Everett said.

Good points.

I agree ,, as a ham operator working on circuit boards ,, old and new ,,,I will agree ,,and add to ,,a cold solder joint can be trouble as well. however in some situations, constant bending will loosen the wires in the crimp , especially if the connectors are soft aluminium .

Also it has been fond that most crck and breaks have been traced to too hot of soldering temps that effect the wire temper.

I had a soldering station with a temp setting and the hot air system as well at one time,,

one more thing not mentioned on the connectors ,,I would use copper crimp or solder connectors to copper wire, aluminium can oxidize against copper.

I know there is noalox but why risk it.

I am a big fan of soldered connections...but NOT for anything involving 120/240 VAC household wiring! There's a reason why you see all those wire nuts, clamp-on, screw-on, or plug-in connectors at your local hardware store in the electrical section. Soldered connections require great skill (and sometimes a bit of luck) to do correctly. There are so many things that can go wrong with them...cold joint, corrosion, solder bridges, lack of good mechanical connection, failure to provide strain relief, etc.

Interesting how this post went from one subject, a cord winder with questions to one that seems more like it is in answer to the cord replacement question in another thread.....

I am close to 60 years old ,,all I know is ,, if I had a dollar for every crimp on connector on motors and capacitors that I have replaced over the years I could live pretty good.


Electric is a science ,, should be taught in school like it was years ago in shop class.

motor connectors should not get much more movement then vibration,,,

On a crimp connector if a wire gets hot it will expand,, then ya have a potential issue with the connector.

This thread was about motor wire,, I think the advise here is all top notch and would love to see this stuff taught in schools like it use to be.

wire solder,,,,,silver,,,,,,,,, melts way below copper ,,all one needs to do is use the right size solder at the right temp ,,, and its a no brain'r, it takes practice but it will out last a crimp on by years.



The hot air system described is a art .

You are so right, an art it is. Reliable soldering is also an art. I did not realize that until they sent me to High Reliability Soldering School for 6 weeks. I worked on a defense contract that produced equipment to go into orbit; Reliability Soldering was a requirement imposed by NASA.

I would add to this thread however that solder joints should not be relied upon for their mechanical strength but for their electrical characteristics. If expected to endure extreme vibration and/or shock, the joints should be mechanically secured.

I think that most of us work with our woodworking equipment in an environment where vibration and shock will not normally present a problem.

I am not sure I believe that. On a solder connector if the wire gets hot it also expands and if it gets hot enough it melts the solder. Bingo! With a crimp you have a mechanical connection.

Trust me it is NOT a no brainer. I have been military certified on high reliability soldering, hot air soldering, silver soldering, silver induction brazing, silver torch brazing, and gold soldering. Not all solder is the same. The alloys are very different and the end item (at least in the aircraft industry) manufacturer specifies the solder they want used with their products.

As far as crimping, almost all wire used in the Air Force is silver plated copper. This is all aircraft wiring and all the ground support equipment that supports those aircraft. They are almost always crimped.

Now, they are not crimped with a pair of linesman pliers like the average home handyman would use. The proper crimpers are calibrated for each pin or terminal and wire size you are crimping. The crimpers are sent to the PMEL lab (Precision Measuring Equipment Lab) every 6 months or a year to be calibrated. Just like calipers or micrometers. Proper crimping is essential.

I had thoughts years ago that this technology was designed for working in space,,,,, Although I haven't done a lot of it ,,,all the new radios are made using this technollogy,, as well as digital transmissions and voice over IP.


There is a video on youtube of a fella that sent a signal from his old ham radio to his cell phone and then sent a signal from his cell phone to his radio.

If it gets that hot its too late no mater what connector you use.

Just saying I have over 20 years on HVAC as well,,,commercial and residential ,,,, cant tell you how many crimp connectors I have replaced.

Not saying they all were replaced with solder type ,,,,, when we started using solder done right,,,, the insulation would melt before the connector was compromised.

From my exp ,,,if that happens there is a issue of neglect of mechanical failure .


Again your exp may not be as myn but combine the 2 and you got some thing.
