Consider using bamboo skewers for dowels. :)

For the dowels they sell an assortment of 1/8" dowels by Handi Craft on Amazon and probably everywhere else. They are of a variety of species so it's easy to match to whatever wood you have. And of course using the disc sander and a very simple jig you can make your own of any diameter.

Very nice. Hardly can detect the dowel. Assume it is from the same type of wood as the frame?

Yes I made them on the SS from the same piece of wood. I prefer them over the dowels because I can give them a slight taper for a better fit and they blend in almost completely

What kind of jig do you use with the disk sander to make them?

The jig is just a taper guide so as you twist and feed the square stock through it rounds it to the size you need. It works much better with the conical disc but I am usually to lazy to change discs. The flat disc works fine. You just spin the stock as you feed it through.
