So I guess the rubber shears apart when there is a very bad binding.

I do not think it's function is a sacrificial link. Rather it is a flexible coupling only.
It is a jig saw. Not much chance of it jamming.

If there is a bad binding, the belt slips.
edit. I have seen posted by others that yes the rubber pulls loose from the metal ends.
The original coupler looks like this.

I have used the L50 Lovejoy coupler. Because of the way the A34 mounts on the 10ER, bolt on the left side and the quill advanced into the ring on the right side, the spider is too thick and one side of it's center will need to be cut away. I used a 5/8 Forstner to remove some of the rubber.

I have not tried it, but I have read that you can use the larger L070 Lovejoy coupler, and you can get a spider with a hole in the center for that size.
