Sorry I dont have all the names straight-its the set screw that guides the quill and stops it from extending past the gear teeth. Its the one usually under putty .

Where on earth did you uncover that "test".

I fail to see how the 'quill setscrew' could possibly affect any rattle.

With the exception of drill usage and possibly sanding disk, the quill lock should be engaged, and that will eliminate any rattling of the quill in its housing. :)

I poked around to see if I could find the reference to the quill setscrew test again-but couldn't. I have the feeling it was on a wikipedia style help page I had found from the shopsmith main website.

I think I'm going to dis-assemble to get at the motor fan and then the Drive sleave assembly and check for issues there next.

I cannot imagine a quill rattle that will be noticeable over the din created elsewhere.

I tried a couple of 'experiments.' I installed a saw blade and guard and found that my PowerPro makes more of the objectionable noises that yours makes at low speed, particularly what I'll call that clunk at startup. Mine does not seem quite as loud as yours relative to the background noise of the system running. I could not replicate the additional noises yours seems to make running steadily at 900 RPM. I then replaced the saw blade with a sanding disc and it was again quiet both starting and running at 250, 500, 900, and 1350 RPM.

Referring to that thread I referred to in an earlier post, I'm not sure what conclusions to draw from this. Saw blade at low speed is not a normal condition. But is the result related to load (inertial)? Both less load, i.e. nothing attached, and greater load, a sanding disc, seem to improve the behavior. This was not the result I expected.

Alright-I may have found the culprit-but Im no mechanical wizard.

I think I hear noise in the Drive sleeve bearing closest to the plastic coupler for the quill.

Ignore the sounds of me rapping my hands against the table, and turn up the volume.

If this is a correct diagnosis, and I need to replace that bearing :

1. Is the plastic coupler just a press fit onto the drive sleeve, or is it attached somehow ?
2. I think I have a bearing puller somewhere-but not sure about pressing a new bearing in place. Suggestions ?

(Note - I wrote the following coincident with the latest from bainin above. It is unedited because it seems potentially relevant. -DLB)

There is a little bit of rotational 'play' in the main spindle that I attribute to the spline drive mechanism. If you install, for example, a sanding disc on the main spindle and another on the upper aux. spindle it is easy to feel this play by rotating a disc back and forth while holding the other. Nothing in this is abnormal or unique to PowerPro.

Be extremely careful if you try this, as a spinning blade is fully exposed: I put my blade on my upper aux spindle instead of the main spindle. It was very quiet, with no evidence of that clunk at startup at any speed.

This isn't conclusive, but a hypothesis: I think the clunk sometimes heard at startup is caused by the slight rotational play in the spine interface to the main spindle. If excessive, it might be caused by wear to the coupler (514083 Drive & Ring for Headstock). Any 'torque jitter' or whatever we're calling the phenomenon that sometimes causes loose setscrews and other parts in the PP may also cause this to sound more like a rattle and may increase wear on the above part. Mine so far has not exhibited this jitter to the point of causing a problem.

There is a ring clip on the inside of the coupler that rides in a groove on the shaft, so it is not strictly a press fit. There are several threads on this. This is the first one that popped up: https://shopsmith.com/ss_forum/maintena ... 20321.html
