I have a 500 set up as a drill press full time so I pulled my crank from my 520 to see how this setup works.

I just grabbed a 3/8" socket and it would appear that a wide range of sized sockets will work and it is a really simple change to make.

What I also noticed is that table travel is effected. In normal mode the table will go all the way up to the tubes, with this mod you loose about 7/8".

The nice part is that this is so simple that if you need that extra movement it would be easy to pull and replace the handle.

I'll put that on my mounting list of things to buy at some point, well unless I never get to it.

I did it. Thanks for the tip about using the socket. It took 39 seconds to make the change.

I did the alteration using the 9/16" socket. Took literally 38 seconds to make the change. I posted a video of me making the alteration on the Facebook Shopsmith Owners page. Could absolutely NOT be easier.
