Haven't seen this question answered so far. The answer is YES! The clip will keep wires from rubbing or getting caught in the pork chop, etc.

Thanks JPG40504 and wa2crk, I will have another look at the machine in the morning, as for the johnsons paste wax, I dont get it here in Azores Portugal, my wife is off to france and will see if she can get some there, or I will get some from the UK - here there are only liquid spray on waxes or aqueous wax liquids, no paste floor waxes, nice to hear that the pork chop picture is right, I am recharging some batteries for the flashlight so I can see better in the headstock and will repost in the morning or afternoon tomorrow

also in the manual it says for lubrication of the shopsmith use 30wt oil, is 30wt the same as 15 w 30 like motor car oil or is it lighter like 3in1 oil?

Where?does it say 30 weight oil?????

#10 Machine oil is my 'understanding'. This is 'electric motor', 3 in 1, turbine oil, sewing machine oil...

I now use the 30 wt motor oil in mine and it seems to run quieter.

Actually - NO! The 15w30 rating on oil is a numeric indicator of the viscosity of the oil in cold weather (15) and hot weather (30).
The viscosity of oil is heavier when cold than when hot. I run 40 weight in my truck year round because the engine runs so hot.

Back to the subject at hand. If you are inclined to use motor oil - do use single viscosity 30w as indicated in the manual. I use what others have recommended - turbine oil in a spout can. Much more convenient and controllable to apply and quite effective as a lubricant.

Just make sure you do one thing - lubricate.

Or you can use Shopsmith oil. Yes I do have a can of what looks to be 3 in 1 oil with a Shopsmith label on it!!!

I've been using 30wt non detergent motor oil in my Shopsmith since 1985 and have had no problems whatsoever.

My Goldie manual(1/62) states machine oil(SAE 10 Weight).

My 510 manual(7/85) states 10 wt. non-detergent oil.

These parts really need to be able to slide easily so a low viscosity oil makes sense.

It is important to lubricate often. Goldie says 10 hrs, 510 says 25 hrs.
