How about 'end milling' a groove in the work table top with a router? It can be seen it my earlier pix.

I've bought several Shopsmiths that had cuts clear through the miter gauge, too. I've also had a couple of rip fences with large gouges in them. I can understand a nick but cut clean through!?!?!?

Is this True Confessions? I have a small saw kerf on the back side of my extension table. It was very easy to make! Using my SS as Half of the support for ripping a piece of plywood, I moved the hand held circular saw about 1/2" into the extension table. Tisk!

I see a lot of you are in to metal work then.... So far the worst I've done is scrape/sand the edge of my new 520 table when the sandpaper decided to come off my conical sanding disk and fold back on itself and when I made a cut in this my original miter gauge extension two years ago... after 32 years of being so careful with it.

I really wasn't trying to get anyone to admit to past transgressions or to spawn a out poring of confessions but it shows that this sort of thing is not uncommon even with experienced people we have here.

OK, you guys are really starting to worry me now...
These things just shouldn't be happening...
"Every time" that you make a cut on a table saw you should know "EXACTLY" the full relationship between your work, any jigs (including the miter gauge and fence) and the saw blade at "ALL" times during a cut.
Do you not watch the progression of the work piece and miter gauge in regards to the blade every second that you are cutting??? Do you not know where the blade is during a cut???
No wonder some of you talk so much about boards getting away from you or kickbacks.
I'm sorry but I just do not grasp how you push a miter gauge into a moving saw blade and not see it coming. That miter gauge is not loose and running all over the table, it runs in a track. The track does not even curve anywhere.

Now in the case of the semi driver I saw in Boone County KY yesterday who was holding a video game in the center of the steering wheel... I know why he came over the line.
These things just shouldn't be happening...

What is not apparent in those pix, is that the miter gauge extension(which also suffered 'damage') makes the metal miter gauge all the more 'non-visible'.
A contributing factor is the distance from the front of the blade(hidden under the workpiece) and the front of the blade cutting visible from the top. We are concentrating on the action that is visible, and tend to ignore that which cannot be seen.
Bottom line is carelessness though!!!!!!!!!!!
FWIW The noise level difference between before cutting the aluminum miter gauge and during is not all that much different!
